About the VMware CIM SMASH/Server Management API

The VMware Common Information Model (CIM) SMASH API allows you to view and to manage hosts using the System Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) standard.

Requirements

These release notes apply to the 6.5 release of vSphere. You should install the following software to use the CIM SMASH/Server Management API.

Before you use the CIM SMASH/Server Management API, install:

  • ESXi 6.5 | 15 NOV 2016

What’s New in This Release?

This release of the VMware CIM SMASH/Server Management API includes the following changes:

  • sfcbd does not run by default.   The sfcbd CIMOM process no longer starts by default on a new ESX installation. In prior releases, sfcbd always started as part of the ESX host startup sequence. Use the esxcli system wbem set|get command to start sfcbd on systems where it is needed.

    If you upgrade your ESX system from an earlier version, sfcbd will continue to start by default.

  • Software update removed.   The software update capability has been removed from the CIM SMASH/Server Management API.

Resolved Issues

This release of the VMware CIM SMASH/Server Management API resolves the following issues:

  • No new issues were resolved in release 6.5.

Known Issues and Workarounds

  • API Methods Supported But Not in Reference.   The CIM/SMASH Server Management API Call Reference does not mention the following methods, but they are implemented by VMware:

    • OMC_NumericSensor.reset()

  • API Elements in Reference But Not Supported.   The CIM/SMASH Server Management API Call Reference mentions the following classes that are no longer supported by VMware:

    • CIM_SoftwareInstallationService
    • CIM_ConcreteJob
