About the Virtual Disk Development Kit

The Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) 6.5.2 EP1 is patch release based on partner demand. It should be forward compatible with the vSphere.Next release.

VDDK 6.5.2 EP1 supports the same set of operating systems to perform proxy backup as VDDK 6.5.1.

Changes and New Features

This release contains bug fixes but no new features.

  • Enabling HotAdd backup of Windows dynamic disks
  • HotAdd fix for device node UUID

Compatibility Notices

This VDDK release is backward compatible with vSphere 6.5, vSAN 6.6, and vSAN 6.6.1.

ESXi hosts and especially vCenter Server should be upgraded in conjunction with VDDK libraries.

Recently Resolved Issues

The VDDK 6.5.2 EP1 release resolves the following issues:

  • HotAdd fails with encrypted proxy and encrypted virtual disk.

When backing up an encrypted VM in HotAdd mode, if the proxy is also encrypted, adding encrypted virtual disk to the proxy succeeds, however opening encrypted disk fails. This is a regression from prior VDDK 6.5.x releases, and will be fixed in VDDK 6.5.3.

  • Open SSL library upgraded.

The Open SSL library openssl was upgraded to version 1.0.2n from 1.0.2k due to a known security vulnerability.

  • XML library upgraded.

The XML library libxml2 was upgraded to version 2.9.6 from 2.9.4 due to a known security vulnerability.

  • Windows dynamic disks could not be backed up with HotAdd mode.

HotAdd transport mode may not work if the backup proxy contains Windows dynamic disks. This was a regression introduced in VDDK 6.5.2, fixed in this release.

  • HotAdd mode cannot work if disk gets HotAdded to wrong slot number.

If the backup proxy HotAdds a virtual disk to the wrong slot number, the device node string becomes something unrecognizable such as '\\?\scsi#disk* whereas VDDK expects a disk node string in the form \\.\PhysicalDriveX where X is a number. This issue is fixed in this release.

Known Issues and Workarounds

This issue was reported against VDDK 6.5.2 and 6.5.2 EP1.

  • HotAdd fails with encrypted proxy and encrypted virtual disk.

When backing up an encrypted VM in HotAdd mode, if the proxy is also encrypted, adding encrypted virtual disk to the proxy succeeds, however opening encrypted disk fails. This issue occurs only if vixDiskLib.transport.hotadd.NoNFCSession=1 is set in the proxy's VDDK configuration file, It is a regression from previous VDDK 6.5.x releases, and will be fixed in VDDK 6.5.3.
